Tea with the Vintage Baroness

It is a rainy Sunday afternoon, perfect for curling up on the couch and watching a movie. As I am writing this, I am watching John Duigan's Head in the Clouds starring Charlize Theron, Penelope Cruz and Stuart Townsend. This movie is a sweeping romantic drama set in 1930's England, Paris and Spain. Three lost and confused souls find each other and latch on. They seem to be growing closer, yet at the same time drifting apart. Can their love for each other keep them together or will it tear them apart?

I loved the costume designs in the movie. The 1930's was conservative and flirty. Women expressed their creativity through their clothing, the hats, the gloves, the long-mermaid dresses.

Skins

Tonight, MTV will premiere the American version of UK Channel 4's hit TV show, Skins. I really hope they don't screw this up. I know that nothing can beat the wit and charm of the British characters. I just hope they don't ruin the reputation of Skins. After the first two seasons fans were in up roar because a new generation took over; Tony's emotionally train-wrecked and slutty sister Effy and her friends would take the reigns. I thought no one could replace Sid and Cassie and Chris and Maxxie, but season's 3 and 4 characters grew on me.

I fell in love with Cook and naive/innocent J.J. We shall see if the Americans can live up to the highly favorite hit-show. I feel like a traitor watching MTV's version, but I am still, nonetheless, curious. From the trailers, it looks like the script is the exact same. I don't think that they change the story-line at all. The writers have just swapped the dry-humor of the Brits with crude American humor. While I try and get my Skins fix with the American version, I cannot wait for season 5 of Skins. Lyra from the Golden Compass is one of the main characters!

Golden Globes 2011

Tonight's styles were pink, green and sparkle.

First off we have ladies in pink. My personal favorite of the night was Natalie Portman wearing Viktor & Rolf. She picked the right dress to show off her growing belly. Congrats to her and her fiance/ ballet choreographer Benjamin Millepied. My second favorite gown was Scarlet Johannson's vintage inspired Elie Saab gown. Lea Michele went with Oscar de la Renta.

Mila Kunis wore a beautifully draped Vera Wang, Angelina Jolie in Versace and Catherine Zeta-Jones in Monique Lhuillier.

Sparkle, sequin and glam was on everyone's mind at tonight's award ceremony. Olivia Wilde chose an embroidered princess gown by Marchesa and bubbly Anne Hathaway rocked a backless Armani.

Movie Review: Blue Valentine

Blue Valentine = Oscar Worthy.

Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams convinced me as Dean and Cindy that love does have a time limit, love can and does run out. The characters of Dean and Cindy seem to be so care-free and loving. Dean, played to perfection by Ryan Gosling, is a man with so much potential- he sings, he plays an instrument, he loves life. Cindy is a young girl who is confused, though at the same time seems to have her life figured out; she sees her life going in a certain direction. She doesn't seem to know what love is until she meets Dean who is handsome and charming and seems to be "the protector."

Sadly, or actually not sadly because it is just life, Dean and Cindy's relationship begins to crumble. Dean hasn't lived up to his potential-he could do or be whatever, whoever he wants but instead is content with painting houses. He seems to provide or at least contribute to his family, to his wife and daughter. Cindy is frustrated that Dean doesn't want to live up to more. She is tired of taking care of two kids. As she says in the film, "I'm done. That's it. There is no more love for you here." This story is that of a disintegrating family, love, relationship.

I don't expect people to read this. I began this blog for me only; just as a way to get my true thoughts out. In fact, if you do know me and are reading this, perhaps you should stop. My family has a lot of drama, a lot of issues that need to be worked out. This "drama" has been going on for as long as I can remember, if fact, it is my first memory. I remember going to visit my dad with my mom, brother and sister. The weather seemed to always be nice so we were always out on the grass. There was a short cement wall that my sister and I would walk across to practice keeping our balance. There was a white fence/gate that was covered in vines and magenta flowers. There was a fountain in the middle of the yard. The drama got better and then got worse again. Better. Worse. Better. Worse. The cycle doesn't stop. It is a disease that can't be stopped. The only person to stop the cycle is my dad. This movie, as great as it is, was hard for me to watch. When watching Ryan Gosling's character Dean rise and fall, it was like watching my dad rise and fall with the same battle. His goofiness, charm and kind-heart win you over, but only for so long. I am at that point of "I'm done. That's it."
